What is a Standby Generator
A standby generator is a back-up electrical system that operates automatically. The concept is really simple. Standby generators are permanently installed outside and operate just like a central air conditioner with two major differences.
- Engine Instead of Motor
- Standby generators have engines, not motors like AC units, which do not run off of electricity.
Automatic Transfer Switches
Standby generators use an automatic transfer switch, not a thermostat, to monitor your utility power.
Within seconds of a utility outage the automatic transfer switch senses the power loss, commands the generator to start and then transfers the electrical load to the generator. The standby generator begins supplying power to the circuits. After utility power returns, the automatic transfer switch transfers the electrical load back to the utility and signals the standby generator to shut off. It then returns to standby mode where it awaits the next outage. To ensure a proper response to an outage, a standby generator runs weekly self-tests. Most units run on diesel, natural gas or liquid propane gas.
Not too many years ago, the majority of people would have thought it silly to invest in an uninterruptible power supply or emergency backup power system. Today, it is not generally considered a luxury – at the business level or even in residential uses. Extreme weather, construction, and many other unforeseen complications can interrupt the electrical service to your business and cause serious problems, loss of data, loss of revenues and even loss of customers. Don’t be unprepared.
